Association Margina is non-profit, non-governmental and non-political association, whose goal is protecting human rights of most-at-risk populations, through increasing the level of their social inclusion and preventing of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and other blood borne and sexually transmitted infections in Bosnia and Herzegovina and region.

Margina was created in 2003. in Zenica as a product of a group of people gathering around a common vision, that every individual from marginalized groups of society in Bosnia and Herzegovina needs to have health and social care.

Increasing number of people who inject drugs and the growth of the AIDS epidemic and other blood and sexually transmitted infections in Bosnia and Herzegovina, resulted in the opening of the first drop-in center in Bosnia and Herzegovina (harm reduction service) in Zenica. Drop-in Centre become the only center in Zenica, which, in addition to sterile needles and syringes, provided its clients with social assistance, a referral to anonymous testing for HIV and HCV, referral to detox or substitution treatment, referral to a therapeutic commune, work with families of drug addicts and so on. Indicator of the success of this center is the increase of number of users of its services each year.

At the end of 2005., Association Margina launches Center for Education and Research, which refers to the methodology of working with difficult to reach populations, based on the principles and practice of harm reduction. In 2006. Margina opens offices in Tuzla, Mostar and Sarajevo, as the result of a need for more harm reduction services in Bosnia and Herzegovina, thus continuing the work of existing services from its headquarters in Zenica. In 2008., as a part of the Association Margina Tuzla, Local volunteer service was opened, which progressed and developed through its work and later became one of the founders of the National Network of volunteer service “I volunteer.” Local volunteer service today has over 300 volunteers.
